A5976/77/79 Microstepping DMOS Driver ICs

Allegro MicroSystems' A5976, A5977, and A5979 are complete microstepping motor driver ICs with built in translator. They are designed to operate bipolar stepper motors in full-, half-, quarter-, eighth- (A5977), and sixteenth-step (A5976/79) modes with output drive capability of 40 V and ±2.8 A. The A5977 and A5979 include a fixed off-time current regulator that has the ability to operate in slow-, fast-, or mixed-decay modes. This current-decay control scheme results in reduced audible motor noise, increased step accuracy, and reduced power dissipation. The A5977 is designed to be a drop in replacement for the A3977 and the A5979 is a drop in replacement for the A3979. The new devices include an added OCP (overcurrent protection) and lower RDS(ON) outputs for lower power dissipation and nFAULT output for improved diagnostics (A5976). At this time, there is no plan to discontinue the existing A3977 or A3979.

This new family is targeted for industrial, consumer, and computer (IC&C) markets in applications such as office automation printers, scanners, copiers, textile, and sewing machines. The interface is an ideal fit for applications where a complex microprocessor is unavailable or over-burdened.
