ISL94202 Battery Pack Monitors

Intersil's ISL94202 is a high integration battery front end that measures the cell voltages for 3- to 8-cells, has a high side current sense measurement, can measure up to two temperature sensors, can control high side nMOS protection FETs in a series charge/discharge configuration, and can control external passive cell balancing switches. The device can operate with an external microcontroller with communication controlled by the I2C serial bus or it can be used as a standalone protector. In standalone mode, the IS94202 protects the pack from overvoltage, undervoltage, pack short-circuit, pack over temperature, and large cell mismatches. The internal EEPROM non-volatile store can be user configured to program protection settings in the standalone mode to enable low cost packs without the need of an external microcontroller. Power consumption is 13 µA (typ) in sleep mode and less than 1 µA in power down mode enabling long term pack storage without fully discharging the battery cells.

Features
  • Eight cell voltage monitors support Li-ion CoO2, Li-ion Mn2O4, and Li-ion FePO4 chemistries
  • Stand-alone pack control; no microcontroller needed
  • Multiple voltage protection options (each programmable to 4.8 V; 12-bit digital value) and selectable overcurrent protection levels
  • Programmable detection/recovery times for overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, and short-circuit conditions
  • Configuration/calibration registers maintained in EEPROM
  • Open battery connect detection
  • Integrated charge/discharge FET drive circuitry with built-in charge pump supports high-side N-channel FETs
  • Cell balancing uses external FETs with internal state machine or external microcontroller
  • Enters low power states after periods of inactivity; charge or discharge current detection resumes normal scan rates

Applications

  • Power tools
  • Battery back-up systems
  • E-bikes
