STMicroelectronics' STNRGPF01 series is a digital controller designed specifically for interleaved CCM boost PFC topologies and intended to be used in high power applications. The interleaving technique splits the PFC management into two or more parallel channels depending on the load condition.
The benefits of the interleaved topology, compared to traditional single stage PFC, are measured in terms of:
The STNRGPF01 series contains all the control functions to implement a high efficiency-mode power supply with sinusoidal line current consumption.
It works in CCM at fixed frequency with average current mode control. Specifically, STNRGPF01 implement a mixed analog and digital signal control offering the advantages of a very high end digital solution without the typical limits of analog ones. The inner current loop is performed in hardware realizing an analog proportional-integral (PI) compensator, ensuring regulation cycle-by-cycle. The outer voltage loop is performed by a digital PI controller with fast dynamic response.
The STNRGPF01 series can be configured by a dedicated software tool (eDesignSuite) to be customized for a specific application. So the user opens the software tool enters the converter specs, and runs the configurator. The results will be: schematic, BoM, and binary code containing the parameters calculated by the tool.
The binary code can be downloaded into the STNRGPF01 IC and then the programmed STNRGPF01 can be used in the application for which it was configured since all the functionalities are already there, like for an analog device.
With this approach, the user is not requested to write any lines of firmware and they are not required to know the device registry and memory map to handle interrupt generation and priority and to implement any function. The user can focus on the application and enjoy all the power and flexibility coming from a digital controller.
