By ABB Embedded Power 79
ABB Embedded Power Hornet family of modules are non-isolated board mounted power converters. The modules have a unique mechanical design that floats the integrated inductor above the main circuit board. This allows for a much smaller footprint as compared to a discrete implementation of the same converter. The Hornet modules adhere to the very stringent IPC9592 standards making them suitable for demanding industrial conditions. The modules are highly integrated designs; externally, they only require one bank of output capacitance, a voltage programming resistor, and one bank of input capacitance. Thermal performance is optimized by the design of land grid array surface mount pads strategically placed, not just for layout purposes, but also to ensure heat generated from the module has very low thermal resistivity to the system PCB. The Hornet family offers solutions from 11 W to 108 W maximum power and step-up (boost converters) that deliver 65 W maximum power. From a user’s standpoint, the modules offer highly accurate output voltage set point (±3%), high efficiency (>93%), exceptional power density (>70W/in2), extended temperature range for extreme environments (up to 105°C), and proven high reliability. These fully integrated power modules can be quickly incorporated in designs used in tough industrial environments.
