DWM1001 UWB/BLE Module and Development Tools

Decawave's DWM1001 module is based on the DW1000 ultra wideband (UWB) transceiver IC, which is an IEEE 802.15.4-2011 UWB implementation. This module integrates UWB & Bluetooth antennas, all RF circuitry, a Nordic Semiconductor nRF52832 BLE MCU, and a 3-axis accelerometer. Each module can be configured as a real-time location system (RTLS) anchor or tag and can also act as a network gateway device. BLE allows customers to interface with phones and tablets for configuration or visualization purposes. BLE can also be used for power management with anchors by waking-up or shutting down tags as they enter/leave pre-defined areas. The built-in antenna and power management drastically simplifies the design of the tags and anchors while the accelerometer enables battery life optimization and the use of a large number of tags through adaptive blink rates.

MDEK1001 RTLS Kit
MDEK1001 provides customers interested in a scalable RTLS network solution the necessary hardware, software, and development environment to quickly evaluate its features and performance. The evaluation kit includes 12 encased development boards (DWM1001-DEV) and an Android application that can be used to configure the network and visualize the devices (requires compatible tablet). This kit will be compatible with the border router functionality and each unit can be used as a development platform as it is based on the DWM1001-DEV which offers USB flashing/debug and access to all the module’s GPIOs.

User Evaluation Steps
  • Mount 4+ units on walls and power them up
  • Power-up the remaining units
  • Discover the units with the tablet application
  • Configure the units as anchors (walls) or tags
  • Upload a floorplan (optional)
  • Visualize the tag locations on the screen
  • Modify update rates directly from the mobile app
Features Benefits
  • Highly configurable system of anchors and tags
  • Default location rate: 1 Hz, maximum: 10 Hz
  • Adaptive update rate based on motion sensor activity
  • X-Y location accuracy typically <10>
  • Out-of-the-box wireless RTLS
  • Configure and visualize the RTLS network with Android application
  • Quickly evaluate DWM1001 module capabilities
  • APIs to customize the firmware to an application
  • Combine several kits and build proofs of concepts
