The 5B Series represents an innovative generation of low cost, high performance plug-in signal conditioners. Designed for industrial applications, these modules incorporate a new circuit design utilizing transformer-based isolation and automated surface mount manufacturing technology. They are compact, economical components whose performance exceeds that available from more expensive devices. Combining 1500 V rms continuous CMV isolation, ±0.05% calibrated accuracy, small size and low cost, the 5B Series is an attractive alternative to expensive signal conditioners and in-house designs. All modules are hard potted and identical in pinout and size (2.25" x 2.25" x 0.60"). They can be mixed and matched, permitting users to address their exact needs, and may be changed without disturbing field wiring. The isolated input modules provide 0 V to +5 V or 65 V outputs and accept J, K, T, E, R, S and B thermocouples; 100 Ohms platinum, 10 Ohms copper and 120 Ohms nickel RTDs, full or half bridge strain gages; mV, V, 4-20 mA or 0-20 mA, and wide bandwidth (10 kHz) mV and V signals. These modules feature complete signal conditioning functions including 240 V rms input protection, filtering, chopper stabilized low drift (±1 µV/°C), amplification, 1500 V rms isolation, linearization for RTD and thermocouple (with 5B47) inputs and sensor excitation when required. The output module converts a 0 V to +5 V input to an isolated 4-20 mA or 0-20 mA process current signal. All modules feature excellent common mode rejection and meet ANSI/IEEE-C37.90.1-1989 surge withstand specs. The 5B Series provides system designers with an easy to use solution for analog I/O in a minimum of board space. The modules' simple pinout and easy mechanical application simplify design. There are also a number of backplanes which provide a complete signal conditioning solution for end users. Each backplane incorporates screw terminals for field wiring inputs and outputs and cold junction compensation sensors for thermocouple applications. Nineteen-inch relay rack compatible units that can hold up to sixteen modules are available.

Model 5B35 converts the input from a wide variety of RTD types to a linearized, high accuracy output of 0 V to +5 V. The module provides transformer isolation, RTD excitation, RTD lead-resistance compensation, signal filtering and input protection against line voltage connection. A series output switch eliminates the need for external multiplexing. The industry standard 5B Series encapsulated plug-in modular package is compatible with all 5B backplanes. Modules are powered by +5 V dc, ±5%. Signal isolation is provided by transformer coupling using a proprietary technique for linear, stable performance. A demodulator on the output side of the signal transformer recovers the input signal, which is filtered and buffered to provide an accurate, low impedance, low noise output. True three-port isolation includes common-mode voltage of: 1500 V rms between input and output, and between input and power; 250 V rms between output and power. The modules provide RTD excitation from a precision current source. A low drift, chopper stabilized, differential amplifier design allows for the use of very low RTD excitation currents to minimize accuracy losses from self-heating of the RTD. The low input offset drift of ±0.01°C/°C and gain drift of ±30 ppm/°C assure that accuracy is maintained over a wide operating temperature range. The four-wire configuration of the 5B35 supplies the RTD excitation current through two leads that are not the signal input leads. Because there is no excitation current in the signal input leads, the lead lengths or resistances have no effect on the RTD measurement. An optimized five-pole Butterworth filter (with 4 Hz bandwidth) provides 116 dB of normal-mode rejection at 60 Hz and 108 dB at 50 Hz. Output noise is an exceptionally low 0.3 mV p-p at 100 kHz bandwidth and 6 mV p-p at 5 MHz bandwidth. The input circuit is protected against accidental application of voltages, such as an ac power line, up to 240 V rms continuous. A series output switch is included to eliminate the need for external multiplexing in many applications. This switch has a low output resistance and is controlled by an active-low enable input. When the output switch is not used, ground the enable input to I/O common to turn on the switch.

The ADIS16000 and ADIS16229 enable the creation of a simple wireless vibration sensing network for a wide variety of industrial equipment applications. The ADIS16000 provides the gateway function, which manages the network, while the ADIS16229 provides the remote sensing function. The ADIS16229 iSensor® is a complete wireless vibration sensor node that combines dual axis acceleration sensing with advanced time domain and frequency domain signal processing. Time domain signal processing includes a programmable decimation filter and selectable windowing function. Frequency domain processing includes a 512-point, real valued fast Fourier transform (FFT); FFT magnitude averaging; and programmable spectral alarms. The FFT record storage system offers users the ability to track changes over time and capture FFTs with multiple decimation filter settings. The dynamic range, bandwidth, sample rate, and noise perfor-mance of the ADIS16229 are well suited for a wide variety of machine health and production equipment monitoring systems. This device also provides a number of wireless configuration parameters, enabling a wide level of flexibility in managing the trade-off between battery life and communication frequency. The ADIS16000 serial peripheral interface (SPI) provides simple connectivity with most embedded processor platforms, and the SMA connector interface enables the use of many different anten-nas. This module supports up to six ADIS16229 devices at one time, using a proprietary wireless protocol. The ADIS16000 module is available in a 37.8 mm × 22.8 mm × 8.8 mm multichip chip module laminate (MCML) structure, and the ADIS16229 is available in a 37.8 mm × 22.8 mm × 13.5 mm MCML structure. Both have an SMA connector for simple antenna connection, have two mounting holes for simple installation, and support operation over a −40°C to +85°C temperature range. The ADIS16000 also includes a standard 1 mm, 14-pin connector for connecting to an embedded processor system. The ADIS16229 provides a lead structure that enables simple connection with battery leads.
