Electrical Vehicle AC Chargers: Although simpler in nature compared to DC chargers, AC charging stations safely deliver AC power from the electrical grid into the vehicle. Due to space and weight constraints in the vehicle, on-board chargers and AC charging stations are typically limited to lower amounts of power (22kW or less), which means charging time is slow – taking several hours. These systems also rely on a vehicle’s on-board charger to enable the conversion of AC power from the grid into DC power to charge the vehicle’s battery. It’s critical that proper measures are taken to safeguard both the charger and vehicle.

Littelfuse TVS Diodes: Littelfuse TVS Diodes are used to protect semiconductor components from high-voltage transients. Their p-n junctions have a larger cross-sectional area than those of a normal diode, allowing them to conduct large currents to ground without sustaining damage. Littelfuse supplies TVS Diodes with peak power ratings from 200W to 30kW, and reverse standoff voltages from 5V to 600V. SMAJ TVS 400W Diodes: Littelfuse SMAJ TVS (transient voltage suppression) 400W Diodes are surface mount diodes designed specifically to protect sensitive electronic equipment from voltage transients induced by lightning and other transient voltage events. With a 400W peak Pulsepower capability at 10µs x 1000µs waveform, the SMAJ TVS 400W diodes feature a fast response time typically less than 1.0ps from 0 Volts to VBR min.

General Purpose ESD Protection SPA Diodes: Littlefuse General Purpose ESD Protection SPA Diodes protect electronics from transient voltage damage. The wide selection offers diodes that meet industry requirements to solve multiple exposure issues.

Electrical Vehicle DC Fast Chargers: DC charging stations are designed to convert the electrical grid’s AC power into DC power that can then be fed directly into a vehicle’s battery system for fast charging – in 30 minutes or less. Because the conversion from AC to DC power is being done in the charging station, these units can provide higher levels of power (50kW to 350kW and beyond) to the vehicle compared to AC charging stations. Working with tens to hundreds of kilowatts of power, efficient conversion, reliability of the system, and user safety are critical.
