Do not short 5v and gnd, otherwise you will burn microcontroller (if you power it via USB) but not lost at all, if you power it via same pins 5v and gnd with usb charger it works (ESP8266 intact). Use it very carefully!Wifi power is very but very short (about 10-20mts). But... here is a trick, to power antenna wifi over 90mts (I dont believe it first but it's true), just solder a thin wire 6cm on the end of the antenna board (do not twist) and put in vertical position straight, up or down and you're done!Great product!
