9. Possible display configurations
The possible display configurations of the PCF8551 depend on the number of active
backplane outputs required. A selection of display configurations is shown in Table 11
. All
of these configurations can be implemented in the typical systems shown in Figure 8
or
Figure 9
.

The host microcontroller manages the 2-line I

C-bus communication channel with the
PCF8551A. The internal oscillator is used and the internal POR is disabled in the
example. The appropriate biasing voltages for the multiplexed LCD waveforms are
generated internally. The only other connections required to complete the system are the
power supplies (V
DD
, V
SS
, and V
LCD
) and the LCD panel chosen for the application.
