Itisbasedonthe(WiznetW5500Ethernetchip).TheWiznetW5500providesa
network(IP)stackcapableofbothTCPandUDP.Itsupportsuptoeight
simultaneoussocketconnections.UsetheEthernetlibrarytowritesketchesthat
connecttotheInternetusingtheShield.TheEthernetShield2connectsto an
ArduinoBoardusinglongwire‐wrapheadersextendingthroughtheShield.This
keepsthepinlayoutintactandallowsanotherShieldtobestackedontopofit.
Themostrecentrevision oftheboardexposesthe1.0pinout onrev3ofthe
ArduinoUNOBoard.
TheEthernetShield2hasastandardRJ‐45connection,withanintegratedline
transformerandPoweroverEthernetenabled.
Thereisanonboardmicro‐SDcardslot,whichcanbeusedtostorefilesforserving
overthenetwork.ItiscompatiblewiththeArduinoUnoandMega(usingthe
Ethernetlibrary).Theonboardmicro‐SDcardreaderisaccessiblethroughtheSD
Library.Whenworkingwiththislibrary,SSisonPin4.The originalrevisionofthe
Shieldcontainedafull‐sizeSDcard slot;thisisnotsupported.
TheShieldalsoincludesaresetcontroller,toensurethattheW5500Ethernet
moduleisproperlyresetonpower‐up.PreviousrevisionsoftheShieldwerenot
compatiblewiththeMegaandneededtobemanuallyresetafterpower‐up.The
currentShieldhasaPoweroverEthernet(PoE)moduledesignedtoextractpower
fromaconventionaltwistedpairCategory5Ethernetcable.
