FTDI's FT260 is a USB device which supports I2C and UART communication through standard USB human interface device (HID)-class interfaces. The USB HID-class is natively supported by most operating systems. A custom driver is not required to be installed for the FT260.
Leveraging the advantages of using a standard USB HID-class driver, which will be already installed in most OS (FTDI's other devices are vendor-class), the FT260 provides an ideal, fast to implement bridge between USB and either UART or I2C peripherals. The small 28-pin WQFN package provides the perfect bridge to a sensor or human interface peripheral application. The I2C mode of operation will also support the HID over I2C protocol defined by Microsoft with Windows 8.
