A1162 Programmable Unipolar Switch

Allegro MicroSystems' A1162 is a programmable unipolar switch that includes an integrated coil surrounding the Hall element. The A1162 was designed with ISO 26262 / ASIL safety systems in mind and is a quality-managed device. The device functions as a normal Hall effect unipolar switch (output turns on in the presence of sufficient magnetic field and the output turns off when the field is removed or sufficiently reduced), but when the diagnostics pin is pulled high, current passes through the coils, generating magnetic field. The proximity of the coils to the Hall element allows the device to sense the field generated by the coil and the device output a PWM signal, which confirms that the device is properly sensing the internally generated magnetic field. This function exercises the entire magnetic and electrical signal path internal to the IC, thereby fully confirming device functionality. The use of the A1162 can eliminate the need for redundant sensor ICs in safety critical applications or increases robustness in safety critical applications that require redundant sensor. It is targeted for the automotive market in shift selectors (PRNDL) applications.
