Smart and Fast Charging Adapter Technology

Phihong’s quick chargers were developed to deliver more power to devices over the standard USB. The largest benefit is the reduced charge time for battery powered devices. There are two pervasive standards to do this:

  • USB power delivery specification defines a standard where the charger powers up in a standard 5 V up to 20 V and 100 W. It then communicates, via CC wire, with the device to be powered to adjust up to a higher output voltage. The output voltages configurable up to 20 V from a USB Type-C connector.

  • Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 supports three voltages, 5 V/9 V/12 V, with up to 18 W of power. Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 features the latest update to the specification intelligent negotiation for optimum voltage (INOV), which communicates with the device to request the appropriate voltage anywhere between 3.2 V and 20 V, allowing for optimal charging at a wider range. The real benefit of this protocol is it can compensate for drops in the USB cable and reduces the power loss in the charging devices by optimizing the output voltage to eliminate a step-down converter to achieve the required battery charging voltage.
